Hong Kong Marine Parks
Hong Kong has a sea surface area of about 1 800 sq. km. with an admixture of different marine life, like chinese dolphins, coral fish, corals, horseshoe crab, etc. To protect the marine life and their habitats against marine pollution and destructive fishing activities. From July, 1996 to now, four marine parks and one marine reserve were designated. They are: Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park, Yan Chau Tong Marine Park, Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Chau Marine Park, Tung Ping Chau Maine Park and the Cape D’Aguilar Marine Reserve.
To protect and conserve the marine environment for the purposes of conservation, education and recreation, certain activities are prohibited or controlled in marine parks or marine reserves according to the “The Marine Parks and Marine Reserves Regulation”. Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department also coordinates Hong Kong Reef Check, organizes activities like Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition, Dolphin Watching, and field studies.
Visitors to Hong Kong seeking a unique experience can do no better than visit one of Hong Kong’s marine parks. There are four protected areas — Hoi Ha Wan, Yan Chau Tong, Sha Chau-Lung Kwu Chau and Tung Ping Chau – each offering fun ways to spend a day close to nature.
At different locations you can go snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming, sailing or canoeing, while the diverse range of fish and fauna, including beautiful corals and exotic sea grasses, make underwater photography a joy.
In one park, you can take a boat tour for sightings of Hong Kong’s famous pink dolphins at play.
