Sai Kung Promenade
Sai Kung Town is known for its fun laid-back atmosphere and great dining, particularly the seafood restaurants along the waterfront where you can choose live fish from tanks outside. You can also find a good selection of European and Asian cuisines, as well as pubs for a relaxing drink. Take a stroll along the Sai Kung Promenade to see fishermen selling their catches alongside the pier and for great views out over the bay.
Passing by the old and new Sai Kung piers, you have the ubiquitous sampans, as well as all the little fishing boats with fresh fish produce that is sold to some of the restaurants and to you, if you wish. Continuing on, you pass the seafood (as well as dim sum) al fresco restaurants and the sheltered bay where all forms of rental or private junks and boats are moored. There is a bit more bustle here, with the sampan ladies trying to get you to go for a ride and the din from some of the restaurants.
Emerging from the last of the old section of restaurants, you arrive at the once quaint, dilapidated and ancient Fish Wholesale Market, which in true Hong Kong fashion was quietly and efficiently bulldozed. Now a new and horrible, ambience- free, green and white roof structure has been erected to represent it.
Here you depart from the waterfront momentarily and follow the old market street, See Cheung Street, towards the renovated red building that houses Sai Kung’s gym (Lifestyle Fitness) and the new Sing Kee seafood restaurant. Left here at this junction takes you towards the waterfront again.
Look to your right, up and over Lakeside Garden – Sai Kung’s only real high rise – to gaze at beautifully formed hilltops and the sharper peaks of Ma On Shan, against a sky blue backdrop, often dotted with puffy, cumulous, marshmallow-like clouds. Some days, dark grey stormy clouds menacingly contrast with the hilltops.
Walking along the water, you leave some of the town noise behind and start hearing bird calls and cicadas again, albeit amongst a little vehicular noise coming from the under-utilized metered car park here. Past the boat builders’ yard, and a little green area on the left, take a look at a small point and see a villager’s open area where he’s put a dining table with umbrella and eight chairs out on the pier. What a life!
Stretching along the waterfront in Sai Kung town centre, Hoi Pong Square is home to a dozen quality seafood restaurants. The stunning variety of fresh seafood in the glass tanks outside the restaurants and the relaxing waterfront scenery further enrich this unique dining experience. Don’t forget to spare some time to wander around this laid-back town.
